Paid grazing internship available on regenerative ranch in Northern Idaho.
We graze irrigated and dryland acreage East of Coeur D’Alene Idaho in the mountains that straddle Idaho/Montana. We have a small cow/calf herd (25 pairs) that we keep year round where we are developing low input genetics, and run stockers (between 50 and 150 depending on the year) from the beginning of May until August. We use managed grazing (or whatever you want to call it) where we utilize poly wire reels and single wire high tensile fencing. We move stock anywhere from multiple times a day to every three days depending on our goals. Cattle move between locations depending on seasonal rainfall and weather patterns. No two years are the same because the weather changes, so the grass does too; we follow the grass. We direct market about 50 beeves locally every year by the quarter/half/whole, but we don’t do any individual cut sales.
Intern’s role would be moving cattle every day, managing fence, water lines, mineral tubs. We calve in May, brand/castrate in June, host a short summer camp in July and host a handful of weddings and a handful of events like farm to table dinners and retreat kind of things. We have three young kids that run pretty feral and we work hard, play hard. Horses are important to us, we have a small herd, but experience riding is not necessary, we do a lot of walking and utilize atv’s as well as horses.
Our main operation is on the North Fork of the Coeur D’Alene which is one of the more pretty, more magnificent spots on earth and if you like to swim, fish, hike, horseback ride, this is a good spot. We are an awesome jumping off spot to lots of wilderness and all the best that Washington, Idaho, and Montana have to offer. If you love computer screens and ‘inside’ time, this might not be a fit for you. If you don’t like getting dirty, this might not be a job for you.
Ideally you start April 15th and finish up sometime around Sept 1. We are flexible on days off except for keystone events like branding, moving cattle to new locations in the event of drought, and summer camp.
We grow almost all of our own food, we have a huge garden and raspberry and blueberry patch, and are good cooks. The food is awesome, you might put on 5 lbs, but it will mostly be muscle. We love laughing, but aren’t above crying.
It’s fun, most people have the time of their lives, but it can be hard too. Not everyone is cut out for this job, just because you like the idea of ranching, it doesn’t mean you will like this. The people that have gotten the most out of this job tend to be energetic, hard working people that tend to smile no matter what is going on. We don’t care about gender, sexuality, size or experience, you just need to be a willing worker with a positive attitude.
What you can expect by the time you leave:
You will learn a lot about managing cattle, managing pasture and improving productivity. You will eat really good food, have a lot of fun, and be very tired most days. You will be tired of Albert talking about ecology and cows. You will learn a lot.
If this might be a fit, reach out to us, we’d love to talk to you.
Thanks!
